As a general rule I usually write blogs on Information Technology but I felt compelled to write this blog on the Australian governments plans to introduce a carbon tax in Australia.

Most people are asking why does the Australian federal government listen to an economist over climate change experts ….. the most simple explanation to this is they care not for the environment but more towards the economics of changes in climate.

A carbon tax benefits no one it only raises the cost of living beyond the means of most people and raises transportation cost which is passed onto the consumer to offset the rising cost of not only production but also the delivery of the basic necessities to sustain life such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

If the Australian government were serious about altering climate change they would come up with some policy to reduce dependency on coal for electricity by implementing strategies that would over time reduce the production cost of green energy products.

To do this, the ratio has to be 50/50, fifty percent green energy such as solar to fifty percent coal use, the Australian Greens want to see coal dependency reduced virtually overnight this is unrealistic and can’t be obtained in the time-frame they are suggesting.

The greens recently did research and found that 83% of the Australian mining industry is foreign owned the country has been sold right from under our feet over a long period of time …. this is very alarming.

Over the past 3 weeks I have been trying to get WordPress 3.0 to install on XAMPP with very little success, just when I think I have it, it tells me it can’t find the install path on the localhost which is generally http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php.

Well that is the directory root path WordPress 3.0 has been extracted to I followed all instructions in installing WordPress 3.0 from the tutorial at http://www.lifespy.com/2007/how-to-install-wordpress-offline/ and also looked at the forums and help at WordPress still nothing works.

It should really be a straight forward thing to do, i’d like to say i’m fairly good and knowledgeable about computers but even for me this is challenging but none the less enjoying.

I’m determined to get WordPress 3.0 installed and up and running because I believe if I get someone else to do it for me where is the learning value of that.

If anyone has advice on how to get WordPress 3.0 to install please let me know I would be very interested in knowing how I can achieve this i’m wanting to install some plugins to this blog so I can improve the overall functionality of my blog.

I wanted to do a blog on time travel as it has interested me for most of my life since I was able to understand what things were about.

Growing up I enjoyed reading books on different subjects especially time travel and ufo’s both pretty much go hand in hand.

People often ask are ufo’s from space I believe not necessarily so but are seen as a fragment of our own capabilities in a distant future.

This blog is about time travel and as such the implications of time travel, in saying that I mean it is subject to abuse.

History could be changed and altered to suit ones needs based on what we know for example Bin laden could be taken out of the equation before he became a problem same with every other ruthless person who existed throughout history.

From a religious point of view on time travel if we could pinpoint the exact day, time and year that Jesus was crucified we could prevent it from ever happening.

So what are the implications of doing that?

It could radically alter history maybe for the greater good or maybe for the worse.

When time travel becomes possible it should be seen as a means to view historical events first hand without interference.

Star Trek had the right idea the prime directive was that they could not alter the time-line and if they did there were serious implications for that action.

The theory is can the past you co-exist with the present you at the same time, Time Cop was an interesting view of what could possibly happen.

I presume, past you is matter and present you is anti-matter mix the two and there are dire repercussions.

I’m not a physicist so I don’t fully understand the field of quantum physics though it is an interesting subject.

I bought the book Programming the Universe: A Quantum Computer Scientist Takes On The Cosmos by Seth Lloyd and interesting read though I haven’t completely read it.

I believe everything that surrounds us is a mathematical equation I don’t fully understand Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, at school a friend explained to me what e=mc2 meant.

Therefore from my understanding of Einsten’s theory of relativity implies (E) energy required to reach speed of light (300,000 kilometers, per second) equals the (M) mass of an object (starship) as it reaches the (C) constant speed of light (300,000 kilometers, per second) which is then multiplied by a factor of two to exceed the speed of light.

To exceed the speed of light would require a massive source of energy nothing currently on Earth is sufficient enough to generate that kind of energy.

The theory is that if you travel at the speed of light you are warping time and space for example a thousand years could pass by in a second while traveling at the speed of light.

There are a number of parts to the National Geographic series Naked Science: Time Machine that introduce viewers to the research that is going on into time travel.

If this interest you I recommend you watch the remaining parts to gain a better understanding of the physics of time travel.

High ethical and moral standards need to be implemented in order for time travel to become feasible and a reality thus preventing radical changes in the time-line.

“We are only limited by the level imagination we choose to use”

Hundreds of years ago they could only dream of putting a man on the moon it was achieved not once but twice by those who dared to use their imagination.

In time we will be able to explore more of the universe we just need to have an imagination that it will be achievable.

We are an inquisitive species we constantly have the need to learn we are in the face of God a childlike species curious about our surroundings.

We would never have evolved if we didn’t have this constant curiosity about how things work.

We live in a period of time that is accelerated by the growth of our understanding of how things work, movies like I robot and Minority Report are entertaining but computers will never replace human reasoning unless we become complacent in the technology we create to make our lives just that little bit easier.

I have written blogs on different things but the one thing that has me in total awe is our beautiful planet.

Unfortunately we are more keen to destroy her for what …. mere money.

I believe with climate change it’s her way of saying “You have hurt me way too long” and as a consequence she is trying to heal herself.

Humans take for granted that we aren’t the only living species on the planet, who speaks for every living thing on Earth such as plants and animals.

Am I an environmentalist?

To some degree yes I am but no different to you or anyone else.

More has to be done to create more renewable energy products and the awareness of green energy products that are already available on the market.

The Internet is a marvelous tool if used appropriately, it can give you knowledge, it can bring people closer, it can create awareness of how each one of us as individuals can change our world.

To some degree humanity is a collective species, we have the ability to reason, we have the ability to stand up for what we know is right and the ability to ease and relieve human suffering.

Has anyone ever questioned what wars do the environment?

Anyone that takes another person’s life does not value the gift of life, I once asked someone “If in the bible it states life for a life wouldn’t that mean the cancellation of the human race”

You be the judge? there is no logic in that, I believe when God asked Moses to write down the Ten Commandments the one about “Tho shall not kill” he was implying “Use your damn brain and be logical”

I’m not religious but there comes a point where we instill in our children “Think before you act” as adults do we really do that ourselves.

No one takes responsibility for their own actions, world governments implement laws that virtually do your thinking for you …. we are all individuals.

If we all start thinking for ourselves we can better our world and make a difference.

I love this planet we call home but I don’t like what is being done to it, the question is “Would you treat your children, your parents, your wife, your husband, your grandparents, your brother or sister” with same disrespect that Earth get’s everyday.

After watching on the news and on YouTube last night the Anonymous denial of service attack (DOS) on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s webpage one would think this attack was straight out of the movie V for Vendetta.

It’s most likely true Internet content filtering would slow down Internet speeds in Australia significantly but someone has to take responsibility of protecting people from the low life’s who exist in this world some of them aren’t fit to be called human they are lower then animals.

So who’s responsibility should it be to protect the global population?

Is it the responsibility of each individual country’s government or should the UN be doing a hell of a lot more then it does ….. no offense to the UN I believe they are a great organization and they do the best they can.

What happened to people taking responsibility for their own actions and not blaming it on a democratic system that has to become to some extent draconian or totalitarian to keep civil peace.

We can watch movies like Children of Men and be scared that this is the way the world is heading but we are all individuals we can do our bit to make sure it doesn’t happen in a diplomatic non-violent way.

The conspiracy theorist in this world are having a field day with this they probably think this is the work of secret societies which I don’t believe for a minute that is what is going on.

I believe some people want to become wealthy with minimum effort and therefore are will to act in an unethical manner to get there.

So people do what is our diplomatic right to freedom of speech and freedom of information be diplomatic not violent.

As the saying goes “The pen is mightier then the sword” we choose where we want to be tomorrow not anyone else.

We can change the future it isn’t written in stone, what are the economic ramifications for reducing coal mining and more money being spent in green energy research.

The global financial crisis was caused by self centered greedy people but in the end karma get’s them or at least I would like to think that it does.

Enjoy this blog and if you have any comments please feel free to leave them even constructive criticism is good shows that we may not all agree with one another but we can be diplomatic about it.

As I have said in previous post on encryption over the Internet that in order for encryption to work it has to be a two-way communications model.

This means that not only does the client computer require a digitally signed encryption algorithm, this includes business servers right up to the Root Zone involving the DNS (Domain Name Server).

The DNS is responsible for translating web addresses such as www.bigpond.com into a binary language that the computer can understand and has been exploited by hackers through DNS Poisoning.

In it’s simplest form the DNS is what allows Internet traffic to freely move around the Internet, a handshake between the client computer and the server.

As I have said in the past, encryption needs to be implemented on both sides and really should be military grade encryption though some people would beg to differ and call this overkill.

This is what DNSSEC (Domain Name Server Security Extensions) does it encrypts data from the higher hierarchy of the Root Zone and is what the US Government is trying to implement in order to make the Internet a more reliable and safe environment for people to use for online commerce.

If you want to know more about this, Carolyn Duffy Marsan of Network World wrote an article on DNSSEC which can be found at PC World Australia http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/277677/techies_bypass_feds_dns_security?pp=1&fp=4&fpid=762453.

According to the article while the US Government works out DNSSEC, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has come up with an alternative approach to allow for DNSSEC deployment without the need for the DNS Root Server being digitally signed through an alternative approach called the ICANN Interim Trust Anchor Repository (ITAR) which allows for a fully functioning DNSSEC deployment without the need to wait for the root zone to be digitally signed.

Steve Gibson at www.grc.com has done several Security Now! podcast on DNS and encryption over the past twelve months which some of you blog readers might find interesting.

I often check the status of my computer’s security and have found that Shields Up always reports I am fully stealthed which is a good thing.

My Internet connection is through a D-Link DSL-G604T Wireless G ADSL Modem Router with UPnP disabled.

I also have Denial of Service (DoS) enabled which also enables SYN Flooding Checking and ICMP Redirection checking.

Under Port Scan Protection I have FIN/URG/PSH attack, Xmas Tree attack, Null Scan attack, SYN/RST attack and SYN/FIN attack all enabled.

Also under Service Filtering I have all these services enabled in the modem router’s firewall, Ping from External Network, Telnet from External Network, FTP from External Network, DNS from External Network, IKE from External Network, RIP from External Network and DHCP from External Network.

This is how I get a stealth on every port in my computer I also use the Windows Vista Firewall but even when I disable the Windows Vista Firewall I still get a stealth on every port.

Basically I am totally invisible on the Internet, the way to be I believe though it is possible to create total anonymity over the Internet by going through a proxy server such as TOR (The Onion Router).

What is questionable is what are your motives for total anonymity on the Internet are you being unethical or acting in a manner which could be seen as illegal.

Black hat hackers are sometimes caught because of their carelessness on covering their tracks I don’t condone this behavior nor am I interested in becoming a black hat hacker though I am interested in becoming an ethical hacker and assist clients in locating security vulnerabilities in misconfigured firewalls.

My background is in marketing with emphasis on e-marketing and online security this should be part of any organizational strategic marketing plan.

I look forward to hearing your comments and thoughts on this blog so please feel free to leave your comments as always.

I thought I would write a blog on how to get Second Life to run on an ATI Radeon HD2600XT video card.

My card is the AGP series of the card as my computer is an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ with 2 gigabytes of Corsair Value Select memory and a 250 gigabyte Western Digital Caviar hard drive.

I also have Windows XP Professional dual booted with Windows Vista Home Premium with Second Life installed on the Windows XP partition as you will see in the Second Life screenshots.

What I am about to show you through screenshots may apply to the PCI Express version of the card as well.

I tried a Google search for a solution to my problem first but only got more questions and very little in answers to a possible solution so I decided to delve into the 3D settings in the Catalyst Control Centre, below is the outcome of what helped me run Second Life.

The first step is to go to the Catalyst Control Centre and select the 3D Settings tab as Screenshot 1 shows below, this way you will be able to get to the Second Life login if you don’t do this initial step Second Life will load for a second and stay resident in memory but nothing will be on the screen.

Screenshot 1: 3D Settings in the Catalyst Control Centre

The second step is to go to the Catalyst AI tab in 3D settings and tick on “Disable Catalyst AI” as shown in Screenshot 2, by doing this it will allow Second Life to start without crashing.

Screenshot 2: Disabling the Catalyst AI in the Catalyst Control Centre

The other thing to remember is to allow Second Life to control anti-aliasing as well as de-select “Enable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing”. I also found that if you allow Second Life to “Control Anisotropic Filtering” Second Life will start without crashing.

This now brings us to the Second Life side of getting Second Life to start without crashes.

When you get to the Second Life login screen you need to select the Edit menu and then Preferences.

You then need to select the Graphics tab as shown in Screenshot 3.

Screenshot 3: Graphics tab in the Second Life Preferences Menu

From here you need to select Hardware Options on the Graphics tab as shown in Screenshot 4 and de-select “Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects”, I was also told that OpenGL VBO can cause objects not to display properly in the Second Life Viewer and also cause the viewer to crash.

Screenshot 4: Disabling “Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects”

So there you have it my solution to getting Second Life to run on an ATI video card, took awhile to work out but it’s cool.

Enjoy

Was looking at a renewable energy company I have shares in today and couldn’t believe that a company that has shares in this particular company reduced it’s shares by 1% from 4.99% to 3.99% just because it was trading at 7 cents per share.

Isn’t it better to hold onto the shares until the market picks up?

One would also think that if people are so concerned about global warming they would invest in green energy companies, that’s one thing I don’t get.

This blog is a long way from my usual IT blogs but I just had to write a blog about the world hitting the panic button.

Reminds me of something from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy “Don’t Panic” eventually the world economy has to pick up but while there is so much hype and negativity about the global financial downturn it’s not helping the situation.

People who panic don’t spend, people who don’t spend cause economic problems …………….. so if you all want to get out of this pretty much unscathed start spending.

My favorite computer game of all time was Deus Ex, the storyline was well written and there are similarities about the game and what is happening now.

For those who don’t know the game it is set in the future I think it was set in 2050 and basically the game is about obviously about conspiracies however it is also about civilization being on the verge of collapse and the world economy being in chaos ……….. does this ring any bells?

For me I think it is stupid if a game has some real life significance rather then being entertaining and fictitious people are allowing this to happen.

Do I think a secret society is behind it I seriously doubt it but I do think extremely large multi-national companies to some degree are responsible for the global financial crisis.

One way to work that out watch how these large organizations are profiting while others are failing and what about the so-called golden handshake another way of putting it corporate corruption.

Freedom of speech is also a luxury “You can have as long as you agree with us”, for me everything in life should be transparent …………………. in saying that somethings should remain secret.

I don’t often show people my opinion of what the world is really like, I see the world as hypocritical, judgmental and if religion comes into this does the complete opposite of what the bible tells us whether it’s Christianity or Islam it really makes no difference it’s all about prejudice and intolerance for one another.

In Australia we don’t have the death penalty but there are instances where the death penalty should apply, why should tax payers pay for the living expense of murderers in prison who don’t value life and in some extreme cases are never to be released.

My point of view is that the world economy is having trouble because of feeding convicted murderers and fighting wars …………. I do see myself as a pacifist but even then there is only so much a person can take.

Sorry for viewing my opinion as I do know I leave myself wide open for criticism but all I can say is think before you act.

Everything we do in life is contradictory …………………. that is how I see things.

If this blog upsets people I am truly sorry but that is how it is.

This is a one off blog about my opinion of things I want to go back to what I really enjoy writing blogs about.
